Storage & Transport
Your body carry is split into two budgets — about 1 m³ of bulky items in your hands and 0.30 m³ of small items in your pockets (see Weight, Carrying & Blocks). A woven basket raises the hands budget, and a backpack carries its own separate store.
The backpack
Craft a backpack
from leather + string. It's a full storage container you carry with you.

- Right-click to open a 27-slot pack. Its contents ride on the item itself and show in the tooltip.
- A quick-open keybind (default B) opens the first pack in your inventory.
- Set it down as a block. Sneak + right-click a surface to place the pack, then right-click it to open like a chest. Break it to get the pack back with all its contents intact.
The backpack's own storage budget
A backpack holds up to about 1.5 m³ of its own — a separate budget that does not touch your body's hands or pockets budgets.
- Only its weight lands on you. A full pack is heavy to haul, but it never uses up your personal carrying space, so you can still pick up a block while wearing a loaded pack.
The woven basket
A woven basket
— plant-fibre gear you carry, no leather or animals needed — raises your hands budget by about 0.5 m³ while it's in your inventory. One is enough; extras don't stack the bonus.

See Weight, Carrying & Blocks for how the carry budgets work.
Armor doesn't cost you volume
Worn armor doesn't count against your volume cap — it rides on your body, not in your pack. You can wear a full set and still pick up a block.
Its weight still slows you, though, so a full suit of plate adds to your load without using carrying space.
