Boats

A boat is not a five-plank craft you knock together in seconds. Like everything else here, it's a real build — you make the oldest boat there is, a dugout canoe, by hollowing out a whole log. And once it's on the water, it doesn't glide for free: paddling is work.

Hollowing a dugout

There is no boat recipe. You work a real felled log:

  1. Set a log down, then sneak + right-click it with an axe to begin hollowing it — the log becomes a dugout-in-progress in place. (Sneak is what tells this apart from ordinary axe-stripping; strip a log the usual way, un-sneaked.)
  2. Char the inside with a live flame — right-click the dugout with a lit torch or a carried ember. The burn softens the wood.
  3. Scrape the burnt wood out with an axe — right-click with any axe. It's tiring work (each scrape costs stamina), and the wood's too hard to cut until it's been charred, so you must char again between scrapes.
  4. Repeat: char, scrape, char, scrape — six cycles hollow the log through, and it becomes a canoe (a boat). Set it on the water.

It's slow and laborious on purpose — a canoe is a serious undertaking, not a crafting-grid afterthought. (The vanilla five-plank boat and bamboo raft can't be crafted — the dugout is the only way to a boat. A chest boat you can still make the normal way, by adding a chest to a dugout you've already carved.)

Paddling costs wind

A boat under paddle drains the crew's stamina. Keep moving and you keep tiring; let a spent paddler run out and the boat loses way and drifts to a stop until they've caught their breath. So a long crossing is something you pace, not a free ride.

Two paddlers are the payoff. With a second person aboard:

  • The effort is shared — each paddler tires at half the rate, so a crewed canoe can cross far more water before anyone's spent (you can spell each other).
  • Two put more into the stroke, so the boat cruises a little faster than one paddled solo (up to a steady cruising speed — you can't row it into a speedboat).
Work in progress

The finished canoe currently reuses the vanilla boat's look and hull — a proper hollowed-dugout model and texture are still to come. The paddling stamina and crew-speed values are first-pass and open to tuning.
